Black Contributions to LGBTQ+

Marie Angel Stamaria

Introduction

On top of the notable individuals who fought for gay liberation within the Stonewall Uprising, other individuals who contributed to LGBTQIA+ rights during the movement were Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) and Stormé DeLarverie (1920-2014). Bayard Rustin was a LGBTQIA+ and Civil Rights activist known for being a key adviser for Martin Luther King Jr. and helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington. Governor Newsom pardoned Rustin and noted that LGBTQIA+ individuals have been unjustly punished for their sexuality by law enforcement during Rustin’s arrest in 1953 for engaging in intercourse with two other men and being registered as a sex offender. Stormé DeLarverie was a bi-racial, butch lesbian who toured the Black theater circuit of the Jewel Box Revue, the first racially integrated revue in North America, as the Master of Ceremonies and being the only drag king.

Importance

The negative connotation behind the term riots in reference to the Stonewall Riots, was not accurate in the perspective of those who experienced the gay liberation movement first hand within the era of the 1960s-80s. Marsha P. Johnson, a Black transgender woman, was one of the main individuals at the forefront of the gay liberation movement and Stonewall Uprising. Her efforts and bravery gave a voice not only to transgender youth but also the Black community. The fight she fought was centered around tackling the intersectional oppression experienced by Black LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Misconceptions and Conclusion

The Black community is the blueprint for gay/queer liberation, and this often goes overlooked and unacknowledged. The experience of the Black community and efforts within the civil rights era on top of fighting for LGBTQIA+ rights is evident of how the intersectional oppressions Black folks have faced has been a crucial precedent for generations of activism. This has opened up ways for future generations to approach social justice and pushing for civil rights and LBGTQIA+ equality.
